Green Jobs in Philadelphia

Philadelphia has launcheiad a program that will increase the amount of green jobs in the city, while helping the poor as well.  They are in the middle of training unemployed workers as part of a program that will weatherize the cities aging row houses.  These workers are learning how to assess fuel usage in the homes and also learning to to install insulation, caulk windows and seal basements.  All of this will have a major impact on the environment be decreasing fuel consumption dramatically.  This is a great program that is starting small but will grow over the next couple of years.  The program is an initiative of the newly formed Greenworks Philadelphia, which endeavors to create more green jobs in Philly.

Green Jobs in San Francisco

Yesterday, the mayor of San Francisco announced that he was adding a resolution to add 4 million dollars to the GoSolarSF program.  The GoSolar Program was developed last summer as a way to incentive businesses and residents to install solar power systems.  Through state and federal grants the cost are virtually cut in half.  At this point, over 700 businesses have taken advantage of this program.  This program has been credited with creating 150 new green jobs in the San Francisco area.  What is even better is that over 80% of these openings were filled by people in the work development program.  This is a great example of job training merging with green jobs to create long lasting opportunities for workers and sustainability for the green jobs industry as a whole.  With the additional 4 million dollars added to this successful program they are estimating an additional 30 new green jobs.  These jobs will all be local to San Francisco as that is a provision in the funding.  Much of the credit goes to Mayor Newsome who has been a true leader in the green jobs movement.  More city mayors should follow his lead and use this program as a model to create green jobs in their cities.

Green Jobs at home

Laid off?- Go Green

With unemployment climbing towards 10%, there are a lot of folks that have been recently laid off. This can actually be a blessing in disguise. This can be the perfect time to start your green jobs search or green up your routine. I will be writing a series of articles about green jobs and the recession that will be filled with useful tips and suggestions. With this article, I wanted to start with one very simple concept that is easy to do and could have a huge benefit for the environment.

If you have been downsized recently and are in the midst of a job search that seems to be going nowhere, why not try a different direction. Have you ever considered working for yourself? Being your own boss could be very rewarding and could also help the green movement. How can this help? Well, if you work for yourself you can work from home and by skipping the commute you will be dramatically reducing your carbon footprint. There are also things that you would never even think off that benefit the environment. For example, you control the account of energy that you use. Instead of turning on the lights, you may consider opening up the blinds. You can also drink water from the tap instead of buying bottled water throughout the day. You can brew your own coffee instead of using the styrofoam cups from Dunkin Donuts. These little things really add up. Plus, think of all the money you would be saving.

About a year ago, I made the decision to forgo the office and I work from home and so does my staff. It has been a positive change in my life and I feel good knowing that I am doing my part to help the environment.

Green Jobs- Keep up the good work President Obama

It seems like the President is getting beat up these days as the economy continues to falter and his approval rating numbers are declining rapidly.  As a green jobs advocate, I could not be happier with what the President had done so far.  This is one area where he has made all the right moves.  If you remember back around 4 months ago during the debates, President Obama stated that clean energy and green jobs would be a top priority of his Administration.  To jar your memory, I included some video below:

He has remained true to his promise.  In fact, today the President hosted an event titled, “Investing in our Clean Energy Future.”  The event was well attended by members inside and outside of Washington and produced some great dialogue and solid action plans moving forward.

Keep up the good work, Mr. President!!
